Train the Trainers

The Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR) is an IARC coordinated multi-partner network with the objective to increasing the knowledge and ability to collect high-quality data that inform cancer prevention and control. As part of the GICR’s activities to strengthen regional capacity and increase support available to local cancer registries, the weeklong workshop on Cancer Coding and Staging was organized with Dr Marion Pineros, Dr Ariana Znaor of IARC, Dr Max Parkin (AFCRN and University of Oxford) and Dr Kevin Ward (Georgia Cancer Registry and Emory University) as lead faculty.

Twenty participants from 19 countries were brought together in this workshop through funding by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO-Euro) and IARC. This key activity aimed at developing the necessary training materials to enable participants to serve as experts within their region in general matters concerning ICD-O-3 coding and Essential TNM Staging, providing onsite support and developing a sustainable network of experts.
