CANCER SURVIVAL METHODS FOR CANCER REGISTRIES - Module 1a (one week, 19-23 June)


Population-based cancer registries (PBCR) are critical to national cancer control planning, and in the monitoring and evaluating of specific cancer control measures aimed at reducing the burden and suffering from cancer in the community. With only a limited number of adequate civil and vital registration systems available in many parts of the developing world, cancer registries provide a unique source of such information on the scale, profile and evolution of the local cancer burden.

Cancer survival is a key indicator of cancer burden for cancer control and a positive measure of prognosis that can reflect the prospects of clinical cure. Survival studies are however sparse in many low- and medium-income countries (LMICs), owing largely to difficulties initiating them in the absence of complete or accurate national mortality information systems.

As part of the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry development (GICR), IARC aims to increase the number of high-quality PBCR in LMICs and expand their functions to informing cancer control and developing cancer research studies. In supporting the development of cancer survival statistics in LMIC for benchmarking purposes, IARC and the Section of Cancer Surveillance is working with our friends and collaborators in the registry community to support local capacity-building in this area and develop a third volume of the benchmark series, Cancer Survival in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Central America (SURVCAN-3).

The module will target cancer registry staff from institutions with good quality incidence data who wish to develop cancer survival statistics at their registry. Training will thus focus on developing technical capacity at the PBCR, particularly on the means to collect (complete) follow-up information on vital status, as well as survival estimation and interpretation.

The module is a comprehensive course covering the following aspects:

  • Essentials for cancer survival studies in countries in transition: organisation; follow-up coverage; life table methods
  • Loss-adjusted and relative survival analysis: population life tables; relative survival analysis; active tracing of cancer patients; data quality indices; loss-adjusted survival estimation approaches
  • Eliciting prognostic factors for survival - Multifactorial analysis: purpose and impact of hospital and population-based cancer survival on cancer control; Cox proportional hazard model; survival modelling by computer software
  • Introduction to the SurvCan-3 study protocol and call for collaboration

Upon completion of the module, participants will have strengthened their capacity to conduct cancer survival studies of the highest quality. More specifically, they will be able to:

  • Explain what are the purposes and impact of hospital and population-based cancer survival on cancer control
  • Describe the organization elements required to develop cancer survival studies in countries in transition
  • Estimate survival using population life tables
  • Conduct relative survival analysis using appropriate methods and software
  • Actively trace cancer patients through online search facilities
  • Use data quality indices for cancer survival
  • Use different approaches to loss-adjusted survival estimation
  • Apply the Cox proportional hazard model for concept and risk estimation
  • Use appropriate software for survival modelling
