One of IARC’s main goals is to provide opportunities to improve the theoretical and practical skills of cancer investigators, particularly for researchers from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Each year the Agency organizes a series of courses worldwide.
During the past 5 years, 45 courses have been held in 24 different countries with around 1500 participants.
The IARC Summer School in Cancer Epidemiology is a major training event that takes place in Lyon during June and July every year.

The Agency also has a strong involvement in more advanced courses. Specialized methodological courses include one on Statistical Practice in Epidemiology with R, in collaboration with members of the R development team. In addition, courses on the EPIC-Soft® 24-hour dietary recall and on the CanReg5 software are organized.

Specific courses on basic and advanced topics related to cancer research are mainly organized in LMICs: cancer registration, cervical/breast cancer prevention, quality management of cancer screening programmes, role of infections in human cancers, etc.
